When we think of Nepal we think of snowcup mountains, high end peaks, snow leopards and monks living in high altitude. But did you know Nepal is more than this, it is also home to two national parks, Chitwan and Bardia national park. I had the pleasure to visit Bardia National Park, as I embarked on a journey from Pokhara on a 22 hour bus, I arrived at Bardia national Park.
Bardia National Park, located in the far western region of Nepal, is a biodiversity hotspot renowned for its thriving wildlife and pristine natural landscapes. Spanning an area of 968 square kilometers, it is the largest and most undisturbed wilderness area in the Terai region. The park is home to a wide array of wildlife species, including over 400 bird species, 30 mammal species, and numerous reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Among the most iconic and celebrated residents is the Bengal tiger, whose population has seen a remarkable recovery in recent years, increasing to an impressive 128 individuals as of the latest count. This resurgence is attributed to successful conservation efforts, anti-poaching initiatives, and habitat protection measures. Bardia is also a sanctuary for other endangered species such as the Asiatic elephant, one-horned rhinoceros, and the elusive Gangetic dolphin, making it a vital refuge for wildlife in South Asia. The park’s diverse ecosystems, ranging from dense forests and grasslands to rivers and wetlands, provide the perfect habitat for these animals, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike.
I had the pleasure to stay at the Eco friendly home stay in Bardia, with amazing local cuisine and exceptical safari guide. I had the pleasure doing a 3 day safari, two day by foot and one by jeep with the company of Shardul, a local guide of more than 8 years, his father was himself a guide and a teacher of education in the local school, teaching them about the importance of nature and fostering interest for the jungle.
Encountering the tiger was one of the most monumental experiences of my life. Coming face to face with such a powerful creature was truly humbling. I was captivated by its beauty, mesmerized by the way she gracefully drank from the creek, every moment etched in my memory as a testament to the awe-inspiring presence of nature's wildest.
